In spring 2014, Professor Mirko Novák (University of Bern) contacted ArchaeoConcept to co-organise a session on Syrian heritage with the Swiss Society for Ancient Near Eastern Studies (SGOA) during the ninth International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East (ICAANE). This session led to the foundation of the International Shirin Association, based in Belgium. Cynthia Dunning Thierstein has been invited to join the advisory board of this new association whose aim is to safeguard the archaeological heritage from the consequences of armed conflict.
