Strategies for Restoration and Reconstruction: Museums, Heritage Sites and Archaeological Parks in Post-War Countries

2015

On the occasion of the 61st Rencontre assyriologique internationale (RAI), organised by the Department of Ancient Sciences of the University of Geneva and the Institut für Archäologische Wissenschaften, Abteilung Vorderasiatische Archäologie of the University of Bern, was held in Geneva and Bern in June 2015. Cynthia Dunning Thierstein (ArchaeoConcept), Denis Genequand (University of Geneva) and Mirko Novák (University of Bern) organised a workshop entitled "Strategies of Reconstruction and Recreation: Museums, Heritage Sites and Archaeological Parks in Post-War Countries". This session brought together some twenty representatives from the Syrian and Iraqi Antiquities Departments, Syrian heritage organisations close to the opposition, and experts from the international academic community. The workshop provided an opportunity to compare government and rebel protective activities and to exchange experiences on reconstruction in Iraq.
